S. "Jack" Phipps age 87, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, died on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC. Jack was born on January 21, 1935, in Vienna, Virginia to Steve and Nannie Phipps. He graduated from Independence High School in 1952.
Jack served in the U.S. Army in Korea for two years before taking a job in the computer department of McLean Trucking Co. in Winston Salem, North Carolina. After moving back to Mouth of Wilson, Jack began dairy farming in 1963. He became a board member of the Milk Marketing Cooperative Dairymen, Inc., then Mid-America Dairymen Inc. He then served as a national board member of Dairy Farmers of America, traveling the country for meetings and advocating for dairy farmers in our region. He also served on the board of the local Southern States Co-op, and was a member of various business and civic organizations. He was active in the Republican Party and was elected to two terms on the Grayson County Board of Supervisors from the Wilson District.
In 1994, Jack and his sons formed Phipps & Sons, Inc. and continued to dairy farm until transitioning to an all-beef operation in 2021.
Jack was a member of Grassy Creek (NC) Baptist Church and enjoyed many pastimes including coon hunting, bird and deer hunting, trout and bass fishing, and watching westerns and baseball.
Besides his parents, Jack was proceeded in death by brother-in-law Roland Sullivan, and grandson, Ryan Phipps.
Jack is survived by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Bartlett Phipps of the home; one sister, Betty Jo Sullivan of Comers Rock; two sons, Lane (Beth) Phipps and Zane (Laura) Phipps of Mouth Of Wilson; two daughters, Teresa (William) Nale of Galax, and Betsy (Mark) Roberts of Saltville; two nephews; two nieces; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, VA on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at 11:00 AM until the funeral service at 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. A family graveside service will be held at Young's Chapel Baptist Church in Mouth of Wilson, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial contribution be made to the Grassy Creek Baptist Church c/o Lisa Finklea 2912 Jefferson Highway Mouth of Wilson, Virginia 24363 or to the Young's Chapel Cemetery Fund c/o Rhonda Bowen 2679 Oak Hill Road Mouth of Wilson, Virginia 24363.
