Obituary

Thomas Gwyn Halsey age 96, of Mouth of Wilson, Virginia passed away at Senior Home Share Assisted Living Center in Independence, VA on Wednesday, April 18, 2023.  He was born on July 5, 1926, in Mouth of Wilson, VA to Vilas Manning and Clyde Cecila Halsey.  He was preceded in death by his parents and all his siblings and his beloved wife, Gioia Henderlite Halsey.

Gwyn lived a life of simplicity, integrity, and honesty.  He was void of the trappings of status, prestige, and appearance.  Gwyn went about his daily routine being and not seeming! While he emulated these virtues, he took every opportunity to instill these attributes in his children.  He first and foremost taught his children accountability.  Gwyn never took a vacation and never took his family on vacation.  His work ethic was totally founded on the words of Ben Franklin, "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."  His children learned these words at an early age.  Gwyn was described by his daughter as "the hardest working man that ever lived!"  He was faithful and honest in all his dealings!  He was always direct and to the point!  He was frugal and used every attempt to mimic this before his family.  Gossip and community rumors were not tolerated in his home.  He informed his children of those in the community who needed prayer.  When death came to the community, the family attended the funeral home.  He put fourth an effort not to reveal his love of cats, but in the end, everybody knew!  Every Sunday morning, the family routine was the same, get ready to attend church, no exceptions!  Men of Gywn Halsey's caliber are becoming a rare commodity.  His death has left a great void in his family and in his community. He was a Veteran of the US Army for which he wanted no thanks or praise, he regarded it simply as his duty!

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Jerry Perry of Mouth of Wilson, VA; his son, Dwight Halsey of Winston-Salem, NC; his grandchildren, Cassadi Perry, Christian Perry, Jackson Halsey, Colton Perry and Harper Perry; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends and caregivers also survive.

The family wishes to express their appreciation for the special love and care offered to Gwyn by the VA Nurses, staff of Senior Home Share, Mt. Valley Hospice, Blue Ridge Home Health and Southwest Home Health.

Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 21, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Young's Chapel Baptist Church in Mouth of Wilson, VA with the Pastor, Rev. Doug Turnmire officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Grayson VFW Post #7726 and the United States Army officiating.
