Obituary

Vera Sue Greer Young, 100, Troutdale, Virginia, passed away at her home on May 1, 2026. She was born in Grayson County, Virginia, and lived for most of her adult life in the Barton's Cross Roads community. She is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Tina and Mickey Cunningham, Troutdale, Virginia; Rebecca and Vernon Simon, Troutdale, Virginia; and Lisa and James Alden, Pensacola, Florida. She is also survived by seven grandsons, one granddaughter, four great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandsons. The younger daughter of six children of Charles Preston and Olga Cox Greer, Vera was predeceased by her parents and five siblings, and by her husband of 70 years, Kenneth Calvin Young.

Vera was well-known as a hand quilter, producing many beautiful quilts over her lifetime. She was selected by the 2023 Grayson County Art and Agricultural Tour as its honoree of the year for her contributions to art as an outstanding quilter, and to agriculture as a farm wife and contributor to her community. Additionally, she was known for her caring attention to both family, friends, and community members. She was a devoted caregiver to her husband, Kenneth, during his final years.

She was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in 1991 and became associated with the local congregations in Marion and Galax, where she was an inspiration for her regular and devoted participation in worship and service.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on June 6 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. Interment will be private. Family and friends are invited to a reception following the service at the Goodwill Grange, Troutdale, Virginia. Floral tributes are optional; the family requests donations be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 7599 Carrollton Pike, Unit C, Galax, VA 24333, or a charity of your choice.
