Viola P. Cox, age 90, of Independence, Virginia, passed peacefully on February 1, 2025, at Grayson Nursing & Rehab, surrounded by her children. She was born on December 12, 1934, to the late Grace Ross and Roby James Privett. In addition to her parents, Viola was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cox, Sr.; her sister, Tressie Goins; and her two brothers, George and Cecil Privett.
Viola lived a life full of love, and dedication to her family, her faith, and her community. She was a proud member of Comers Creek Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as treasurer for many years. She could often be found tending to her garden. She took pride in growing fresh vegetables, spending many hours canning them to share with family. She found great joy in tending to her flowers, and also had a special affection for birds; she delighted in watching them and faithfully kept her feeders full.
She is survived by her loving children: her son, Walter Cox, Jr., and his wife Shelia of Independence, VA; and her daughter, Kathy Cox, and David of Mount Airy, NC. Viola's family was her pride and joy. She cherished every moment spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Viola leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Karrie Baker and Joel, Alex Baker and Magan, Eliza Mallory and Kenneth, and Dustin Cox. She was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Terra, Amelia, Troy, Lexi, Piper, Lakyn, Colby, and Talynn.
She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Teddy Privett of Troutdale, VA, and Virginia Cox of Independence, VA, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at Reins~Sturdivant Funeral Home at 2:00 PM with Rev. Tim Barr and Rev. Doug Halsey officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Potato Creek Cemetery in Grayson County.
