William "Bill" Lee Strong, age 74 of Independence, VA passed away at his home on Wednesday, December 17, 2025.

Coach Strong was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late Grover Reese Strong and Shirlene Burgess Strong.

He is survived by his brother, Brad Strong and wife Mary Ann of Bristol, TN; two nephews, Bradley Strong and wife, Kim of Roswell, GA, Reece Strong and wife, Bond of Roanoke, VA; one great-niece; three great-nephews; he is also survived by special friends, Chad and Shelia Wright of Independence, VA, and John Patterson of Galax, VA.

Bill was a proud 1969 graduate of Tazewell High School and continued his education at Emory & Henry College, later earning his Master's Degree from the Sports Academy in Alabama. A gifted athlete, he played both football and baseball and was a member of the Phi Gamma Phi fraternity.

Coaching was not just a profession for Bill—it was his calling. He coached baseball and football at Tazewell High School from 1974-1978.  During his tenure there he was instrumental in reorganizing and reinstating the baseball program. In 1978, he brought his passion and leadership to Independence High School, coaching there for many years.  During his years at Independence High School and Grayson County High school he celebrated 12 district titles and 162 career wins while serving as head coach as well as Athletic Director. He later spent six years coaching at Ashe County High School in West Jefferson, NC where he gained the respect of the student body as well as his teaching peers.

Bill was a devoted member of Independence  Methodist Church, where he served in the church choir. He was a mentor to countless young people, and will be remembered as much more than a coach—he was a steady example of integrity, discipline, and kindness. He believed in setting a good example and took  pride in guiding young lives toward their full potential. Above all, William loved his family. He spoke often of his nephews and cherished every moment spent with those he loved.

Memorial services will be conducted at the Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in early January 10, 2026 at 2:00 PM.  The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 prior to the service.  Services will be conducted by Pastor Eli Carrico, Dr. Jamie Cassell, Mitchell Vaught, and John Patterson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Grayson County High School Athletic Department or the First Methodist Church of Independence, VA.
